After completion of a recent update on my ubuntu servers I noticed that in fact /etc/motd.tail had been removed (via intrusion detection file check I run after any update, also compared to daily checks).
The update I ran on my servers consisted of the following packages: grub-common grub-pc initscripts libxml2 sysv-rc sysvinit-utils I am not sure which one of those packages is responsible for removing motd.tail, but searching for /etc/motd.tail led me to initscripts and the discussion in this thread. Curious if any fixes implemented to the problems mentioned in this thread included removal of /etc/motd.tail?? My assumptions are that... - /etc/motd.tail can be modified by a sys admin for their own use - removal of /etc/motd.tail during a package update is not desired behavior (at least not without asking the user first) I apologize if I'm barking up the wrong tree with this observation here on this thread, but thought I should post it somewhere. Perhaps one of you can advise where else I could post. Thank you. -Rob
