Hello,

after some tests here are the result and a solution for you:

To see Japanese fonts on the xfe GUI (and its tools) you need a font with
support for Japanese, which must set as default font in xfe and its tools.
The standard default font "Helvetica" is inapt for this use.

The simplest way for all (not only asiatic languages) is to set the menu
font and text font to pseudo fonts of the system:

Sans-Serif (-> search for the best "sans" font, most Helvetica/Arial)
Serif (-> search for the best "serif" font, most Times/TimesNewRoman)
Monospace (-> search for the best "fixed" font, most Courier/CourierNew)

Some fonts with support for Japanese fonts should be installed:
- ttf-kochi-gothic (Debian package)
- ttf-kochi-mincho (Debian package)
- ttf-unifonts (Debian package, medium quality)

The upstream developer will write some notes about this special situation
into the source package documentation (and perhaps on its homepage).

I hope this will help.

Have a nice day.

Joachim (Germany)
