On **MY** system, the /etc/environment file contains the setting of both LANG and LC_ALL to identical values. However, I don't remember if I did this myself, or if some system tool or library setup did it for me, so I don't know how it is on a "clean" Debian box. Also I don't know exactly if or when this file is used. bye Jerome Alet
