Reassigning to debian-reference (and the original report [1] can be used to track more fundamental fixes). Osamu, the idea of this request is to document Bug#628458 (if the sysadmin replaces a directory like /opt with a symlink, dpkg removes it after the last package using it is removed) and to encourage use of bind mounts in section 9.3 "Data storage tips" to avoid this and similar complications.
