Once upon a time, there was an intent to work on new upstream version integration. I was planning to do some initial work but left it unachieved....and I don't really foresee when I can work again on this. Nicolas is pretty much inactive in Debian now so I doubt he'll be working on it too. Maybe the package should be orphaned?
