Got it, thanks. ;-) That was all pretty much as I thought, and I can
indeed do without the /etc/modules entry (whose absence lets my system
boot normally; AFAICT so far, all is otherwise well with 2.6.39).

I reported it as https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37514 and
am hereby advising the BTS (via a Bcc: to control@bugs.d.o) that I have
done so, though I've left the moreinfo tag set for now in case you need
anything else from me.
