I've just finished implementing this.  I have the environment variables
taking precedence over the executable name, since I think in practice it's
usually more flexible.

I don't have a qemubuilder environment, so I could definitely use some
testing to be sure I didn't do anything that broke your idea.  Could you
download and try:

and let me know if this works properly for you?  I've just released 1.20,
which has this change and various other improvements as well.

(Guido, this should be ready for inclusion in the package once this
functionality is tested, although I've not tested it much yet.  I'm
starting to use it for my regular building now to be sure I didn't break
anything.)
