I downloaded and ran the binary (bin/64/bitcoin) in Debian (unstable) and I got a DB error (so I could actually use the program), but in a nice window. I only have libwxbase2.8-0 2.8.10.1-3.1 debian pacakge installed (no other wxWidgets installation). Are you sure 2.9 is needed?
