Not sure if you follow the upstream bug so just in case:

* the behavior was indeed changed with the gio port
* Thunar directly uses g_file_info_get_is_hidden() which doesn't treat ~
files as hidden
* there was in fact an opposed bug report asking for ~ files to not be
hidden by default (https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6871)
* a comment on this bug makes sense to me: the behavior should be the
same as ls: by default ~ files are shown, they're not only shown with
-A/-a.
