Yes. It was mostly a Mother's Day present to my wife :)

The `soft linking' bit is indeed helpful for end users of prebuilt versions,
but having to get all of the (superfuous) build-dependencies set up
(in a non-Debian context, probably not really relevant here) was killing me.

Yes.

I've been basing my changes on what's in your git master on sourceforge;
all of those patches are from a `git format-patch' run (hence the numbering
in the file-names); I think there may be a couple of patches, which I filed
with different `artifacts' on SF, that may not apply cleanly if you don't
apply them in order. I can just post my git repository somewhere so that
you can pull from it, if you like.
