It looks like an udev failure then? Do you have a directory /run?

It could be, yes i have one?

For the first attempt you can

# echo snd-virtuoso>>  /etc/modules

The driver will be load at each boot.

i was hoping to avoid this, and get at the root problem.

# modprobe -v snd-virtuoso
