The screen area where a document is displayed is set arbitrarily, using document-dependent instead of screen-related values. This means an area outside which nothing is displayed (i.e. a blank), not even the newly introduced grey background, however the document is resized. The "fit width" and "fit page" features also work relative to this area. This did not happen with previous versions of xpdf-*, e.g. 3.00-13. Hope this is useful.
