The Debian on which I experienced the problem was Lenny that was gradually upgraded into testing a year and a half ago. On the same system I had some other issues with gnome that I did report, e.g. when selecting a folder containing a few GB of data, the nautilus would freeze for more than 7-8 seconds,... I had also installed some other non-Debian software (e.g. Code_Aster and its dependencies) on that machine which, now I think, might have been the cause of the problem. I also tried and failed to reproduce the bug on another machine which was also upgraded from Lenny into testing around a year ago. This machine did not have any non-Debian software installed. P.S.
