I tested on abel, which has 2.21.51.20110419-2. gas now doesn't report the line number at all, but it does report the name of the symbol, which seems good enough: /tmp/cc8YLq1F.s: Assembler messages: /tmp/cc8YLq1F.s: Error: .size expression for xscsale_dma_a0_map_area does not evaluate to a constant Unfortunately it's also reporting the name of a temporary file (presumably preprocessor output) and not the source file.
