Package: plymouth
Version: 0.8.3-9.1
Severity: important

Same issue here. Graphics provided by:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation NV17 [GeForce4
420 Go] [10de:0175] (rev a3)
with nouveau.

The boot splash does appear for about 2 seconds, but then disappears and is
replaced by typical boot messages. It stops at "Waiting for /dev to be fully
populated... done." It is at this point that I have to press enter.

It occurs to me that this is essentially the same behaviour as booting with
'single', except without the root password/ctrl+d prompt. After pressing
enter once, my system boots the rest of the way normally, albeit without the
progress bar I was hoping for.

This system was upgraded from Lenny in February, shortly after the Squeeze
release. Prior to the upgrade I had not attempted to use any kind of
bootsplash.

If anyone wants to puzzle through some possible fixes with me in real time,
I'm generally available on irc.oftc.net #debian with the name 'sney'.
