It is a regression. It does not occur in the author's upstream version. I just checked procps CVS and it is stil diffrent from the Debian patched version: http://procps.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/procps/procps/top.c?revision=1.134&view=markup. Though "-u" for "-U" in the error message is an upstream bug.
