We are happy to announce that this feature request will be met. The version in the master branch of the GNU XBoard repository now has a move-type-in dialog similar to that of WinBoard.
Typing a letter or digit (other keystrokes are reserved for key binding to menu functions) when the board has focus will popup the type-in box with the character in it. You can then complete the move there and on <Enter> the box will close, and the move will be processed. You can also type a number, which will be interpreted as a move number, and bring up the corresponding position of the currently loaded game in the display, like you moved there with the < or > button, or by clicking the evaluaton graph or move list. In Edit Position mode you can also type a FEN in the box, which will cause the corresponding position to be set up. H.G.
