I noticed on http://www.debian.org/intl/l10n/po/sk that something must be wrong in the PO file. Indeed, it's declared in Latin1 while actually encoded in UTF-8, and contains another error (maybe produced by msgcat using the wrong charset: a character split in two lines, breaking it). The following patch seems to partly solve the problem (not sure that the police used inside the game allows non-ASCII characters), since terminal message seems (I can't read Slovak, but characters looks normal) not broken anymore. Jozef, X-Debbugs-Cc, may be able to confirm, give more input and eventually complete his translation.
