Package: libcairo2 Version: 1.10.2-6 Severity: important I confirm both the problem (affecting 1.10.2-6 from testing/unstable) and the temporary workaround described by Alexander Godumov. Note that this may also be related to bug #580175 (same symptoms).
I used to run libcairo2 1.8.10-6 from stable/testing without problems. When 1.10.2-6 hit testing a few days ago, I immediately noticed a terrible slowdown of all programs that make use of libcairo2 (Iceweasel both 3.5 and 4.0, Icedove 3, Inkscape, Gimp, QtCurve in KDE4 are the main ones I use) due to very high CPU usage in both the applications and the Xorg process (up to 100% on one core for long periods of time in Iceweasel on some web pages that used to render smoothly). This made the whole system quite unresponsive, which is why I'm bumping the bug to "important" (and I'm only using KDE4, I don't dare imagine what GNOME users have to endure). Switching back to libcairo2 1.8.10-6 from stable (against apt advice, but there seems to be no ill effects) solved the slowness, all those apps now run very smoothly just like before the update.
