Sam,
Thanks for your careful monitoring of the status in Debian.
No the Debian package is not using duende. When I get round to actually
experimenting with solutions I will look into duende. However one
concern I have about duende is what you wrote in #436214.
Unfortunatly, what Duende doesn't do is wait around a few seconds before
daemonizing to make sure that MaraDNS does not have some syntax error in
the mararc file or something else that makes MaraDNS exit right away.
So, any script that checks to see if MaraDNS is running is going to have
to use start-stop-daemon and see if the pid in the appropriate pidfile
is in the process list with the name duende.
Another concern is that using duende might make the process too
"un-debian". However that consideration has to be balanced against other
considerations and at some level of complexity duende would clearly be
the right way to go.
I certainly accept that since you have already provided a solution in
duende, this is not an upstream issue but rather a Debian integration
issue. If I end up going the duende route and I cannot make that work
for some reason I will come back to you.

I believe the problem here is that maradns does not detach itself like a
proper daemon should.
