For the record, this is now /usr/lib/$(DEB_HOST_MULTIARCH) with dpkg >= 1.16.0 (they differ on i386). Ubuntu has a minimal patch. This bug is blocked by upload of dpkg 1.16 for DEB_HOST_MULTIARCH, which sadly doesn't seem to have a bug number.
