I just encountered the same bug on debian lenny. Looks like this is already fixed upstream, see e.g. http://sources.redhat.com/git/gitweb.cgi?p=lvm2.git;a=commit;h=16d385ac6a3c96e40c2a0022ab83377cb116f7d9.
Judging from the commit comment using a physical volume name explicitly works around this problem.
