I removed the symlink in /etc/xdg/menus and tried starting Xfce from a virtual terminal. I can confirm that 'startxfce4' gives me a session with working menus. Unfortunately, switching to another VT with Ctl-Alt-F# crashes the session. For now, I have restored the workaround symlink and have gone back to using xdm.
