I have the same problem with Calibre on a up to date unstable debian system.
I think the issue here is probably the same as this bug report.

I'm getting the same error as the original poster now, but before the
upgrade I noticed that the meta data edit button was hanging as
described in Calibre Bug ticket 8009.
That bug has been closed, it seems to have been solved with updates to
pyqt and pysip.
* Status changed from new to closed
* Resolution set to fixed
As of 7325 it is fixed. Thanks Kovid. :D
Also if anyone is looking for a short term work around,
$ calibre-server &
Still works and you can then connect to http://localhost:8080 to read
you existing books.
