I agree with Philippe; I don't want to make the program incompatible with other versions of am-utils compiled for non-Debian platforms, so adding support for extended regexps is a non-starter.
As the new maintainer, I have done what Philippe was going to do and have modified the cookbook so that it does not use the extended regexp syntax. This modified cookbook will be distributed with the new package of version 6.1.1 of am-utils, on which I am currently working.
