Upstream informed me that 64-Bit support is *broken* and Arb has definitely many problems on these architectures (which include Sparc). The packaged version of arb is definitely NO STABLE release. This is outlined in the package description of the latest upload for i386. So if you want to do serious scientific work you are advised best to download the latest stable release from http://www.arb-home.de/ The version for i386 might work or might work not. You have to be aware that you can destroy your data. The chances for reasonable work are drastical higher than on 64-Bit machines. I have informed upstream about the bug and they are working on 64-Bit problems with lower priority than other things. Any help from the Debian community, especially people who care for porting issues is heavily welcome.
