Basically, emacs-snapshot isn't supported. I installed emacs-snapshot from Julien Danjou's package[1]. In my environment, auto-complete-el is working with emacs23 and emacs-snapshot. $ ls -al /usr/share/ | grep emacs drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 2011-03-06 00:50 emacs drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2011-03-05 16:12 emacs-snapshot drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2011-03-05 14:15 emacs23 So, /usr/share/emacs-snapshot isn't a symlink to /usr/local/share/emacs/23.3 .
