Only the package has a different name. The software name itself is "GDM - GNOME Display Manager" in both cases. Moreover README.Debian references 2.26, which was gdm, not gdm3. This is confusing (bug reported, see bug 616603). One may also wonder why one has "/usr/share/gdm" instead of "/usr/share/gdm3".
