I guess it has something to do with:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes

I never got Lucid to run properly on the same machine.

Package: ldm

ldm starts on old with intel chipset but does not restart.
starts on an old what? older version of ldm? older version of Debian? is it
running in an LTSP environment? which versions of ldm, debian and ltsp worked
and which versions didn't?

i've tested without problem an intel video card:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated
Graphics Device (rev 02)

i've seen problems with newer versions of X.org and some intel video cards:

   lspci | egrep 'VGA.*82845'

which intel chipset are you having problems with? could you provide the output
of lscpi? do machines with other video cards work fine?

are you running LDM in an LTSP environment? if so, this *might* be related
debian bug #587900... try setting X_VIRTUAL_AUTO=false in
/opt/ltsp/i386/etc/lts.conf and see if that helps. that's the only thing i
know that might cause LDM to behave differently on intel video cards.

live well,
