I have just upgraded a system to squeeze, and found that because of this bug the system is unusable (I have home directories mounted using am-utils.)
Manually installing the wheezy version fixes things (am-utils_6.2+rc20101201-1_i386.deb, libamu4_6.2+rc20101201-1_i386.deb). It would seem to me that this bug is one which should be fixed in a minor release of squeeze (it makes the package unusable, and the fix doesn't involve a cascade of other packages, just the two). I don't understand the process for suggesting this, and am hoping this e-mail is a sensible way of requesting it.
