Well, dpkg thinks you did.  Otherwise it wouldn't have left garbage
around.  Presumably this happened around the date on .dpkg-new.  I
couldn't reproduce it on either a sarge->unstable upgrade or a
long-time unstable system, so I don't know what I can do about this...
