I confirm the same bug. I can not open images in PNG format. Especially when they are created with GIMP.
But if I open a file in another format then I see also the PNG files. Curiously EOG launched from the terminal does not report any error, the cursor simply idling for several seconds and then opens the window with the title but no image appears.
