I get the same output but the return code is zero.
That is why the test passes in the macro.

Does Peter get the warning message:

        xmlto cannot generate text format, this format skipped

in the configure output? I don't.

I'd like to understand where the difference is.

        #!/bin/sh

        cat > conftest.xml << "EOF"
        EOF
        if test "yes" = yes; then
          if xmlto --skip-validation txt conftest.xml ; then
          have_xmlto_text=yes
          echo $?
        else
          { echo "$as_me:$LINENO: WARNING: xmlto cannot generate text format,
this format skipped"
            echo "$as_me: WARNING: xmlto cannot generate text format, this
format skipped";}
        fi
        fi

The one thing that bugs me about the patch is that the version of
docbook may eventually be
no longer available and this macro must remain backward compatible for
eternity.
