The last is very unlikely. What stage have you reached when this occurs? Is it when the partitioner is starting up or when you have set up all the partitions you want and try to commit the changes? Have you tried booting the installer with 'linux26'? That will make the installer use a 2.6 kernel instead of the default 2.4 kernel.
