Do you have a rootpwmoddn option in nslcd.conf? This is needed for
password modification as root to work.

To get more debugging info you can start nslcd with the -d option from
the command line. Adding debug at the end of the pam_ldap line
in /etc/pam.d/common-* should also provide more information.

I suspect it will be a bit difficult but if a proper fix for this can be
found, I'll discuss it with the the stable release managers to see if
this can be fixed in a point release.
