Package: bugs.debian.org
Severity: wishlist

In random surfing of the www.debian.org website, et al, I noticed that
the closed bug 610639 (at
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=610639 with title
"Installation of winbind does not activate the winbindd daemon") has
an invalid value for the Package: header.

Specifically, the Package: header for this bug has a value of "winbind
- Samba nameservice integration server", when presumably it should
have only had a value of "winbind".

This causes spurious entries in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgindex.cgi?indexon=pkg .
Specifically, there are spurious entries for the non-existent packages
"-", "nameservice", "integration", and "server"; "samba" however is a
real package. I'm sure there's other spurious things out there caused
by this bad value, also.

Presumably some sort of sanity checking of the value of the Package:
field, upon receipt of a message sent to sub...@bugs.debian.org but
prior to its bug being added to bugs.d.o, could be done to prevent
this sort of thing in the future. Note that it would be insufficient
to merely add sanity checking to the reportbug package, since that is
not the only way bug reports can be introduced into bugs.d.o.
(Indeed, this very bug report is being created as a raw e-mail message
and not via reportbug -- I hope I don't screw it up!)

I'm not entirely certain of what this sanity checking should entail,
or what should be done when it is determined that a message contains a
partially or entirely invalid value for the Package: field. But, I'm
sure there's something useful that can and probably should be done.

Hope this is of some use, interest. Thanks for your time. Be well.

Joseph
