All I know is I just use the .debs people provide. The rest is too deep water.
$ apt-cache policy bbdb
bbdb:
  Installed: 2.36-2
  Candidate: 2.36-2
  Version table:
 *** 2.36-2 0
        500 http://ftp.tw.debian.org/debian/ unstable/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I'm willing to update my /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
