extlinux is unable to boot off of filesystems on md raid devices created
with version 1.2 metadata. this has apparently been considered upstream
and seems possible, but is not yet implemented:

in particular the squeeze d-i creates md raid devices with version 1.2
metadata and there is no way to select any other type of metadata, which
makes it somewhat difficult to use extlinux on new squeeze installations
with software raid. (the best i have been able to do is to create a
dedicated md array for /boot and recreate it with version 0.90 metadata
post-install.)
