This bug is still valid for version 20110117 of ia32-libs-gtk package under Debian Squeeze 6.0.0. I tested it for skype and acrobat reader. The only workaround so far is to start these two applications from a shell by issuing:
export GTK_PATH=/usr/lib32/gtk-2.0 before running their respective commands. Otherwise selecting it from the menu causes the same error messages experienced before. If one sets GTK_PATH globally to /usr/lib32/gtk-2.0 then 64-bit applications refuse to work. -- Ekin Akoglu
