These are not interpreted under Emacs M-x shell (standard comint-based shell.

SUGGESTION

Please check environment variables before sending ANSI escapes:

       $ env | grep EMAC
       EMACS=t
       INSIDE_EMACS=23.2.1,comint

E.g. if "INSIDE_EMACS" matches regexp '\d\.\d.*comint'
