When converting the PDF file from the link below to UTF-8 text using the 
following command:

  pdftotext -layout -enc UTF-8 FranklinPierceCatalog.pdf fpc.txt

pdftotext causes a SIGABORT with the following error message:

  Error (0): Call to Object where the object was type 11, not the expected type 
1 or 2

The linked PDF file was convertable to UTF-8 text using xpdf-utils.
