- Make sure you have xfonts-{100,75}dpi installed. Make sure you have the X Server restarted since installing those packages. - what output does "xset q" produce? - how many and which files does ls /usr/share/fonts/X11/*/helvR14* find? - Your X log (/usr/log/Xorg.*.log) and the /usr/share/fonts/X11/*/fonts.dir files would also be interesting.
