Well, if I mounted the filesystem at say /srv/mysql, then symlinked /var/lib/mysql to /srv/mysql, there would be a lost+found problem, I believe. I suppose I could have mounted it at /srv/mysql and then created /srv/mysql/db and them symlinked to there. Just feels rather roundabout. But if that's the supported way to do it, I can change it to that way. I normally just figure if I want X on its own partition, mount the partition there; that strikes me as the Unix way to do things.
