The problem seems to be that the kernel's install.sh script calls
/sbin/installkernel, even though UID != 0 and I am just doing a
local install in a temporary package build directory. This is fatal.
I am not sure that debianutils is to blame here, but version 3.4.2
works fine on amd64. Unfortunately I have lost it for i386.
