For what it's worth, I believe having current committer dates also
alters the way gitk sorts its display.  I noticed this when I was trying
to retroactively build a Debian Guile repository based off of (and
integrated with) the upstream tree (which itself was created by a
cvs->git tool).

Perhaps intent matters.  In my case, I really was trying to create
branches as if they'd existed all along, possibly the same thing people
are trying to do when they use repository conversion tools.
