Have you tried with LC_ALL=C and with ~/.config/chromium, ~/.cache/chromium moved out of the way? Could you say a little more about what it means that it is dead? For example, after I hit ctrl-shift-I, the panes take a while to show, but then I can click on various HTML tags and the corresponding part of the view area gets highlighted.
