Looks like it is much easier than that. The maintainer simply must remove the debian-specific icon patch. The original padevchooser uses the "audio-card" icon which exists in Gnome. The patch changes this to "stock_line_in" which is no longer available. I don't see any good reason to keep this patch. Maybe "audio-card" was not in the gnome icon theme when the package was created but today it is available and even much more visually appealing than the now missing stock_line_in icon. The last update to the package was more than three years ago and this bug report is already some months old. Is the maintainer still maintaining it? Someone wants to do a NMU?
