If you want to be of help, please consider porting legacy applications that still make use of mailcap entries to the freedesktop specification. Or alternatively, you can write a system to generate mailcap entries automatically based on desktop files. My personal feeling is that this bug and similar ones, asking to add mailcap entries to hundreds of applications that don’t have them (because they do it through a better system), are a waste of time.
