flashplugin-nonfree should provide some visible documentation about
updates. At least a /usr/share/doc/flashplugin-nonfree/README file
is a must.
Until now I thought I would have received updates automatically
(either from a package upgrade or from a notification e.g. by cron),
but after looking at Adobe's web site, I noticed that the plugin was
not up-to-date. Even after being aware of this fact, due to the lack
of documentation, I found what was going on only by doing a "dpkg -L"
(not what a normal user would usually run) to see that the package
provides an update-flashplugin-nonfree utility.
A README file should:
1. say that updates of the plugin are not received automatically;
2. mention the update-flashplugin-nonfree utility (and its man page);
3. tell the user what to do if he would like to receive notifications.
For (3), an example cron file in the
/usr/share/doc/flashplugin-nonfree/examples directory would be useful.
flashplugin-nonfree could even propose to install such a file in its
postinst script, or there could be an optional cron file as a config
file. That would solve bug #475580. If this is not done, as users
obviously don't read the README file of every package they install,
the flashplugin-nonfree must make sure that the user is aware that
neither updates nor update notifications are automatic.
