Forgive me if it is not, but I feel this may be important to this bug.
Today I upgraded the cups & libcups packages on my system from 1.4.4-3
to 1.4.4-7 and found to my amazement that the above symptoms have
disappeared! Previously I too could not print from any gnome-based app
or from the GIMP. After today's update I can print from gedit, etc. and
from the GIMP as well. Perhaps the problem was not with ghostscript
after all.
Printing from the GIMP using the gimp-gutenprint plugin still does not
work, but that is probably not related though. With that plugin, the
printer prints gibberish and a heap of formfeeds in stead of the picture.
